pearlsMost pearls today are cultured.  Marine and freshwater mollusks (oysters and mussels) are collected and a small shell bead placed inside.  The mollusks are then returned to the water where they make the pearl.  Layers of calcium carbonate are secreted, coating the piece of shell, to form a spherical, oblong, or irregular-shaped pearl.

It takes roughly 3 to 7 years for mollusks to produce a single pearl. The color of the pearl varies depending on the type of mollusk.  (The oysters and mussels that make the pearls are not related to the edible varieties of oysters and mussels.)

Most natural and cultured freshwater pearls are found in the waters of Japan, China, and the South Seas, however many are harvested along the coasts of Australia and the rivers of Austria, France, Scotland, and Ireland. Cultured freshwater pearls are also grown along the Mississippi River in the United States.

 Healing Properties of Pearls

Some healers use pearls to help balance body rhythms and hormone levels with lunar cycles, and to harmonize human beings with the natural world.  The inner glow of pearls is thought to tap inner-wisdom and nurture love.  Pearls are also believed to signify innocence and faith, stimulate spiritual transformation, and encloses you with an aura of calm and beauty.

diamondThe diamond is the hardest gemstone and one of the most valued.

Diamond has remarkable optical characteristics.  Because of its extremely rigid lattice, it can be contaminated by very few types of impurities, such as boron and nitrogen.  Combined with the wide transparency, this results in the clear, colorless appearance of most natural diamonds.

Small amounts of defects or impurities (about one per million of lattice atoms) color diamond blue (boron), yellow (nitrogen), brown (lattice defects), green, purple, pink, orange, or red.  Diamond also has relatively high optical dispersion, that is ability to disperse light of different colors, which results in its characteristic luster.  Excellent optical and mechanical properties, combined with efficient marketing, make diamond the most popular gemstone.

Diamonds are the symbol of innocence and constancy.  They are used today as engagement rings, symbolizing the purity of love.

Healing Properties of Diamond

Diamond does not have a specific healing nature.  It does supplement the energy of other gemstones. The diamond will increase the power of the emerald and the amethyst to a higher level.  Healers often have rings or necklaces set with diamonds surrounding the amethyst.

It is said diamonds are good for coughs and mucus problems.

Care must be used when wearing a diamond necklace as it can block the energy flow if the wearer has negative thoughts or feelings.

Most diamonds come from South Africa.

Ruby works with bloodflow as an aid to circulation.  It aids the cleansing and removal of infection or germs in the blood.  The ruby may be worn in jewelry, but never close to the solar plexus, as the ruby has a disquieting effect upon it.  In a ring, wear it on your left hand.

The color of rubies varies from vermilion to red.  The most desired color is “pigeon’s blood,” which is pure red with a hint of blue.  If the color is too pink, the stone is a pink sapphire.  The same is true if it is too violet – it is then a violet sapphire.  The best rubies and star rubies are bright red.  Most rubies come from Burma and Thailand.
